A Revolution Brewing

The Boston Tea Party and coffee in America have a surprising connection. For context, the Boston Tea Party refers to an incident in 1773, during which the American patriots dumped hundreds of chests full of tea in the ocean. 

The British government was deep in debt, and implemented taxes on many things. Paper, paint, glass, newspapers… Tax-paying citizens were furious, as they felt it was taxation without representation. Tea was amongst one of these taxed items. 

Before and after the incidents of the Boston Tea Party, the anti-establishment, anti-British, and pro-American sentiment was on the rise. People started looking for alternatives to British products. Not just because these alternatives weren’t taxed and therefore cheaper, but because we didn’t want to support the British government. 

After all, the American people had no representative in the British parliament. So why were we being taxed? 

Nationwide sabotage started. People were not buying or consuming products that had been taxed. One of these was coffee. 

Back then, tea was the beverage of choice, as it was in most of the civilized world. Tea is not only tasty, but it also contains caffeine, which is something most of the world uses to get through the day. 

When Americans back then ditched tea, they immediately started noticing the change. Life without tea was… bleak. Therefore, coffee offered a caffeine substitute. Coffee, which was popular in Europe but not quite in America, started becoming more commonplace. 

Coffee houses popped up, where you could buy a cup of coffee instead of tea or beer. 

When Drinking Coffee Became Patriotic

In other words, drinking coffee was the patriotic thing to do. To support your own people, and to deny economic support to a tyrannical government. 

This fact cemented coffee as an American drink. After the events of the Boston Tea Party, you can bet that the Americans who fought in the American Revolutionary War were hopped up on coffee, and not British tea. It was coffee-fueled Independence! 

As you can see, it’s not far-fetched to say that coffee might just be the most patriotic drink of all. It has a unique history in a time when our country gained freedom, and as such should have a special place in the hearts of all patriots.
